PERSONALITY Goku is a happy, hungry monkey. If he’s not eating, he’s thinking about eating. If he’s not thinking about eating, he’s probably unconscious and when he comes to, the first words out of his mouth will be “I’m hungry.” As long as he is fed and not alone, very little can faze him. He spent 500 years chained in a cave, everything in the world is awesome after that. Due to only being in the world for less than 10 years and then being raised in a monastery, he can be very naive. He wants to be everyone's friend until they prove themselves untrustworthy. He wants to be helpful but has a prankster side that can occasionally get in the way. Goku is very active. Even when sitting still some part of him will be bouncing. He has boundless energy and needs outlets. His favorite outlet is fighting or games. He's a skilled fighter and loves to spar, but knows he's very strong and will only do so with people he won't accidentally hurt. He's completely confident in his abilities as a fighter or anything physical. He's less confident with anything cerebral and will look around for help to figure it out. He can come off as simple due to his naivety and that he prefers things to be straight forward. The one thing he cannot stand is a liar. SKILLS/ABILITIES There are two sets of abilities to go over: with diadem and without diadem. He always has all of his powers, but they are immensely stronger without the diadem. See the next box for without diadem. With his diadem, Goku is a very proficient fighter. He can fight unarmed or with Nyoi Bo. Compared to a human he has super strength, super speed, and is hard to hurt. He’s not indestructible by any means, but it takes a lot to take him down. He’s almost never defeated in the series. The first time he was defeated by the priest Kami-sama a year into the journey, he had an existential crisis because it had never happened before. He also has heightened senses, particularly his sense of smell. His extrasensory perception is also strong. Psychic phenomenon will often make him feel sick because he’s so sensitive to it. Seitan Taisei / Demon Power Limiter Goku always wears a golden diadem. This is a god-made demon power limiter and is the only thing that can suppress the power of the Saiten Taisei (Great Sage Equaling Heaven). If the diadem is removed or broken Goku transforms physically to have pointed ears, slit puples, razor-sharp claws and fangs, and long hair. The diadem can be removed by anyone, and can be broken when Goku is in a lot of emotional distress. Without the diadem, his speed and power increases to the point of being able to kill lower gods with a single swipe of his claws. He also has a strong chi, with the force of his awakening being enough to send weaker fighters flying. He’s connected to the Earth and is able to manipulate it to heal himself. At one point in the series, he was dying from multiple gun shot wounds so Hakkai removed his diadem. He was able to draw on power from the Earth to heal himself and begin attacking as though nothing had happened. Essentially, he’s a killing machine who can regenerate.
